Unity Church of Auburn

What is Unity?

Unity is a link in the great educational movement inaugurated by Jesus Christ; our objective is to discern the truth in Christianity and prove it. The truth that we teach is not new, neither do we claim special revelations or discovery of new religious principles. Our purpose is to help and teach (hu)mankind to use and prove the eternal Truth taught by the Master.
- Charles Fillmore, Co-founder of Unity

Unity is positive, practical Christianity. It teaches the practical application in everyday life of the principles of Truth taught and exemplified by Jesus Christ, as interpreted in the light of modern-day experience by Unity and the Association of Unity Churches. Unity is a way of life that leads to health, prosperity, happiness, and peace of mind. The Association of Unity Churches, in cooperation with Unity, has established centers of study and worship throughout the world where people study and practice the Unity way of life.

There are five basic principles which sum up the essential teachings of Unity:

1.
That which we call God is the source and essence of all that is; there is no other enduring power.
2.
As human beings, we have a spark of divinity within us, the Christ spirit within. Our very essence is of God, and therefore we are also inherently good.
3.
Thought has formative power. We can create our own experiences because everything in the manifest realm has its beginning in thought.
4.
Prayer is creative thinking that changes us - our consciousness - so that we can recall the truth of God's presence and power in all situations.
5.
Knowing and understanding the laws of life, also called Truth, is not enough. We must also live the truth that we know.

We believe that all people are created with sacred worth. Therefore, we recognize the importance of serving all people in spiritually and emotionally caring ways. We welcome all regardless of race, gender, age, creed, religion, national origin, ethnicity, physical disability, or sexual orientation.

Unity doesn't ask people to park their brains outside the sanctuary door. No one is required to accept anything we teach without question. At the same time, humankind has never been able to completely explain all of the whys and wherefores of existence and consciousness. To dance with this mystery usually requires a leap of faith at some point, the kind of trust that says that even though I may not be able to figure it all out; I'm willing to keep moving ahead knowing that the way will be made clear.

Unity has found a way to practice the presence of God through the life and teachings of the Christ named Jesus. However, we believe in one God and many paths. Therefore, we honor and respect the truth teachings of all spiritual traditions that sincerely seek the presence of God in order to create greater peace and harmony on earth.

Unity is a spiritual path that honors our questions and encourages each individual to take responsibility for their own personal spiritual growth. In a popular culture that values conformity and discourages questions and dialogue, we present a refreshing alternative. That's why we call Unity of Auburn "A Church Uncommon." Please know that you are always welcome here.
