What is Unity?
Unity is a worldwide movement of prayer, publishing and education offering practical, spiritual teachings that empower abundant and meaningful living. We are culturally Christian and Spiritually unlimited which means we honor all paths to God while drawing upon our Western Judeo-Christian heritage as a source of wisdom and inspiration.
Unity was founded in 1889 in Kansas City, Missouri, by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore. After Mrs. Fillmore's remarkable healing using prayer and affirmations, many friends became interested in how she accomplished this healing. Unity grew from small prayer circles in living rooms to the worldwide movement it is today. Unity World Headquarters and Unity Worldwide Ministries are located in Lee's Summit, Missouri. Unity has no creed or statement of faith. We are not a set of doctrines, we are a movement and we encourage each individual to take responsibility for their own spiritual growth using the tools and teachings we offer. There are five basic principles which sum up the essential teachings of Unity:
That which we call God is all good and the source and essence of all that is; there is no other enduring power.
-
As human beings, we have a spark of divinity within us, the Christ spirit within. Our very essence is of God, and therefore we are also inherently good.
-
Thought has formative power. We can create our own experiences because everything in the manifest realm has its beginning in thought.
Prayer is creative thinking that changes us - our consciousness - so that we can recall the truth of God's presence and power in all situations.
Knowing and understanding the laws of life, also called Truth, is not enough. We must also live the truth that we know.
We believe that all people are created with sacred worth. Therefore, we recognize the importance of serving all people in spiritually and emotionally caring ways. We welcome all regardless of race, gender, age, creed, religion, national origin, ethnicity, physical disability, or sexual orientation.
If you are seeking a deeper meaning and purpose in your life and a stronger connection to God, we are here to offer a spiritual home and a community that will support you on your quest.
