Equanimity:

  • A consciousness characterized by peace and tranquility especially in the face of difficulties and challenges.

Mindfulness:

  • The intentional, accepting and non-judgmental focus of one's attention on the emotions, thoughts and sensations occurring in the present moment.

Surrender:

  • “To surrender fully is to be open, in a deep way to each experience of our life. It means to allow ourselves to feel fully each response to the events and the circumstances of our life.”
  • “We can say and do what is necessary to protect and to assert ourselves in the world… being surrendered means that we don’t try to control and orchestrate the flow of our life; we let life unfold. Yes, we ask for what we want; we voice our opinion when appropriate; and we act when we need to act – but we are not attached to the result.”

Flexibility:

Flexibility is essential in both tangible and intangible reality and along with equanimity and the acceptance of healthy surrender are the basic tools we need to live beyond the ups and downs of change.

When a demon, such as an unwanted emotion like craving, anger, depression etc. arises, instead of habitual response of acting it out or repressing it (methods of trying to rid ourselves of the uncomfortable feeling) we can just sit with the raw energy of the emotion, (the raw energy under the story line) and get to know it. Eventually, little by little, it begins to dissolve, so that when the resistance is gone, so is the demon.
